Donegal will play host to its second annual experimental music and art festival when Distorted Perspectives lands back in Letterkenny over the May Bank Holiday Weekend for four amazing nights of music in the Regional Cultural Centre.
The festival, which is a Donegal County Council Cultural Services Section initiative, opens on Thursday, April 30 and will showcase Derry and Letterkenny talent both old and new, featuring BBC favourites Autumns, Red Flare (a new group with The Undertones guitarist/songwriter John O’Neill and musician/artist Locky Morris) as well as a very special surprise Letterkenny band that recently released a debut album.
The jam-packed programme includes German electronica pioneer and current member of Tangerine Dream, Ulrich Schnauss, who combines multilayered synthesizers with beats and ethereal vocals, serving as an aural escape route from the trappings of reality on Friday May 1.
Other acts on Friday night will include top Irish eletronica performers Shammen Delly and Nyt Bloomer. Another highlight will be hugely acclaimed San Francisco space rock voyagers Moon Duo on Saturday May 2. They have recently been featured in 40+ million selling video game Grand Theft Auto V and released their 3rd LP ‘Shadow of the Sun’, already a critic’s contender for album of the year 2015.
Moon Duo will be supported by Cian Nugent on Saturday night, one of the leading guitar players currently in Ireland, bringing his full band The Cosmos to the festival for the first time.
The festival will close on Sunday May 3 with a very special night that witnesses Letterkenny act clanns (previously The Capitol) release their debut EP alongside music from Belfast drone pop purveyors Documenta, and poetic and haunting singer/songwriter Robin G. Shiels, winner of the NI Music Prize for best act in 2014.
In addition to these four great gigs Distorted Perspecives will also feature art and film. The RCC will host a specially commissioned video and sound installation by highly-renowned American artist Richard Noble, open only for the duration of the festival. A Belfast Film Festival curated programme of short films and documentaries will include 80s synth rock film Miami Connection, works by Ireland’s twisted genius of animation David O’Reilly and David Holmes’ directorial debut ‘I Am Here’. This is a beautiful ambient movie about loss and homecoming and will be screening in Century Cinemas Letterkenny at 2pm on Sunday, May 3 and admission is free.
